THE LORD HATH SET APART HIM THAT IS GODLY FOR HIMSELF

by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. Kemble of Capac Bible Church

“But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.”  Psalms 4:3

I do not know about you, but I am rather choosey.  When offered a choice, I will carefully examine my options, and will always choose that which I think is the very best — whether it be a book, a painting, a puppy, or whatever — and once I have made my choice, I delight in that choice, and will often show others that which I have chosen, so that they too can revel in the excellent choice that I have made.  You are probably the same way.  It is our natural inclination to choose that which we consider to be the best for our very own.

In the above text, we read that our Lord is choosey also.  He has set apart him that is godly for Himself — and He delights in him, and will hear him when he calls out to Him.

Do you want to have God’s attention?  Do you want Him to set you apart as a special treasure?  Do you want Him to delight in you?  Do you want Him to hear you when you call?   Then seek after godliness and personal holiness.

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night . . .” for the person who does so “. . . shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”  Psalms 1:1-3

We all have a sort of affinity toward those who love us.  Their love and admiration naturally endear them to us.  It is even so with our Lord.

“Because he hath set his love upon me . . . therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.  He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.  With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”  Psalms 91:14-16

The person who sets his love upon the Lord will be treasured by Him and honoured of Him, and will most assuredly enjoy His favour.

Oh what a treasure!  Oh what joy!  Let us each determine right now that we will seek after godliness and personal holiness all the days of our life, that we may enjoy the special blessings which attend those who do — and more importantly — that our blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ may find delight in us, and that we may be a blessing to His heart!

Amen!
